Known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” the main attraction in Rwanda is mountain gorilla trekking. Despite being one of the most densely populated countries in the world, Rwanda is one of its cleanest. On the last Saturday of the month, the entire country gathers in their respective neighborhoods for Umuganda, a day dedicated to communal work for public good. Activities include street cleaning, repairing roads and building homes for genocide survivors.
Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park gained renowned in large part because of Dian Fossey, who passionately dedicated her life to their protection. The mountain gorillas inhabit the lush high altitude rainforests surrounding the Virunga Mountains. Visitors to Nyungwe Forest National Park can go chimp trekking and see several other primate species. After successfully reintroducing lion, black rhino and other megafauna, Akagera National Park is now a Big 5 safari destination.
Kigali is Rwanda’s capital and main port of entry for international visitors via Kigali International Airport. The Kigali Genocide Memorial offers a moving and rare insight into the country’s tragic past.
