Kwita Izina 2025: 40 Baby Gorillas Named in Rwanda
Rwanda celebrated the 20th edition of Kwita Izina on 5 September 2025 in Kinigi, at the foothills of Volcanoes National Park. This year, 40 baby gorillas were named, bringing the total named since 2005 to more than 438.
Rooted in Rwandan tradition, Kwita Izina mirrors the cultural practice of naming newborns while celebrating the individuals and communities dedicated to protecting gorillas.
The ceremony featured cultural performances, global guests, and the announcement of plans to expand Volcanoes National Park by 25% to secure habitats and support surrounding communities. Under the theme “A legacy of community-centered conservation, securing a sustainable future for all,” new initiatives such as park restoration crowdfunding and community focused projects were launched.
The event brought together rangers and conservationists and global celebrities like Michelle Yeoh, Yemi Alade, Michael Bay, and Khaby Lame among others.
The event highlighted Rwanda’s ongoing commitment to protecting its mountain gorillas and promoting sustainable tourism.
