Obonye was born and raised in Seronga, a village within the Okavango Delta. After finishing his education and completing an advanced course in IT, he decided that a life in front of computer screen wasn’t for him, so he joined Wilderness Safaris in 1997 as a poler and tracker.
His natural talent in the bush was spotted immediately and he was ear-marked for further training and skills development, culminating in 2000 with Obonye obtaining his Professional Guide’s License and Walking qualification. Since then he has worked extensively in the Kwedi Concession and has experience in numerous camps in the Delta and Linyanti. He undertook a brief secondment to Ngamiland Adventure Safaris in order to obtain a broader understanding of the safari industry, outside of the Wilderness parameters.
Obonye’s appreciation of and empathy for the area that he grew up in is unparalleled, and this makes for a genuine and sincere safari experience where natural surroundings and local culture all play a part. He is currently the Senior Guide at Vumbura Plains South Camp.
