Samburu National Reserve

Though relatively small at 64 mi², Samburu is, nevertheless, well-reputed. This reserve in northern Kenya has an arid landscape characterized by scrub desert, thornbush, riverine forest and swamps. Elephant and lion are plentiful. Leopard is occasionally seen. Several mammal species not seen in Kenya’s south reside here, including Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and the endangered Grevy’s zebra. The reserve’s birdlife is strikingly colorful and abundant. Culturally, the main highlight here is visiting a village of the Samburu tribe.
