Moinga Timan

Moinga was born to a Maasai family in a small remote village called Ololosokwan village bordering the northeast of the Serengeti National Park and always dreamed of becoming a safari guide from his early years tending his father’s cattle. From that point, wildlife and nature captivated his attention and curiosity.

Joining our Asilia Guide Training Programme in 2015, Moinga thrived in the initial month-long immersive training in Tarangire National Park. He quickly rose to become one of Asilia’s best guides, and was recognized and awarded Tanzania’s best guide of the year in 2018 in the Tanzanian Tour Guide Awards. His passion for wildlife and conservation are impressive. His guiding experience spans many regions that Asilia operates in across Tanzania, from the wild landscapes of Ruaha in the south, to the mobile camps of the Serengeti. Moinga spent a season on Rubondo Island, experiencing an entirely different ecosystem and experiencing the chimpanzee habituation programme and unique other species that live there. During his time there he worked closely with TANAPA rangers and chimpanzee researchers, sharing knowledge and experience in this remote island outpost on Lake Victoria. He is a qualified walking guide and currently heads up the Olakira Migration Camp guiding team.

Moinga’s favourite animal is a pangolin; his first sighting was when he was 10 years old with his father and their grazing cattle. His father told him when you see a pangolin, the Maasai tradition says you will become rich and have an everlasting life, as sightings of them are so rare.
