Preston Mutinda

"Mutinda" for short was born into the Kamba tribe on 16th February 1955 in Machakos an incredibly dry but still rapidly expanding farming area to the south east of Nairobi.

Mutinda first became a tour guide in 1979 after guide training at the Utalii College in Nairobi, and later joined us in 1986 working as one of our specialist naturalist guides.

Mutinda is an active member of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association and has travelled overseas several times including a lecture tour to the USA in April 2001. Today, when not on safari, Mutinda lives in Kangundo just outside Machakos on a 10 acre farm with his wife Mary and two youngest children Ken and Safari. Both of Mutinda and Mary’s eldest daughters Emma and Naomi are currently studying in the USA on academic scholarships at Cuesta College, California and Kenyon College, Ohio respectively.

Mutinda is also a keen businessman and over the years has developed several small business opportunities for his family. Five years ago he saved enough cash to buy Mary a small road side shop selling food and other daily provisions to the local community; they also own a small ex-tours mini van converted as a local taxi operating around the local Machakos district.
