The Great Rift Valley, the world's largest fault, is 2,500 feet deep, 18 miles wide and some 1550 miles long. It is home to lakes such as Magadi, Nakuru, Elmenteita and Bogoria that have no outflows and therefore accumulate mineral salts brought from the highland areas which form an alkaline soup rich in algae. It is this "soup" that attracts millions of lesser and greater flamingoes. Other lakes, such as Naivasha and Baringo, with outflowing rivers and resulting fresh water have their own diverse birdlife. The Great Rift Valley Lodge is situated at about 7,000 feet on the slopes of the Great Rift Valley. Midway between the Samburu and Masai Mara reserves the Lodge has views of Lake Naivasha, the jagged volcanic crater of Mount Longonot and the sloping shoulders of the Aberdare Mountains.
There are 21 twin and nine double rooms, all with private balconies overlooking the spectacular valley and large waterhole. Rooms are located in spacious two- and three-storey blocks, and are furnished with large four-poster beds and modern en suite bathrooms. Several rooms have interlinking doors that convert them into spacious family suites. Alternative accommodation is offered in ten cottages overlooking the golf course. These comprise two, three or four bedrooms, beautifully furnished lounges and dining rooms, and the same magnificent views throughout.
